A Day in the Life of an Online Entrepreneur

When people hear “online entrepreneur,” they often picture laptops on the beach, working a couple of hours a day, and endless freedom.

The reality? It’s a mix of discipline, balance, and building a business around the life you actually want to live.

So let me take you through a real day in my life — the routines, the work, the challenges, and the rewards.

Coffee and firefighting

Morning: Walking, Wellness & Coffee

My alarm goes off around 6am, and the first thing I do is lace up my shoes for a 2-mile walk. This isn’t just exercise — it’s part of my 365-day challenge for Dementia UK, a cause very close to my heart.

Back home, it’s time for our morning ritual: sorting vitamins, effervescence, and electrolyte drinks. A small thing, but it sets the tone for looking after our health first.

Then comes the best part: coffee. And not just any coffee — a fresh pot from the Smeg coffee machine Sue and Hannah bought me as a present. It’s the little joys that make a routine feel special.

With coffee in hand, I sit down to write. Usually, that means drafting a new blog post for Volcano Publishing, replying to emails, and posting a couple of updates on social media. This is the creative fuel that keeps the business alive.

Daytime: Serving on the Front Line

Once that’s done, I jump in the car and head to my day job at the Fire Service College.

Here, I have the privilege of working as a fire instructor, helping firefighters become instructors themselves. It’s a role I love — demanding, rewarding, and full of purpose. Supporting others to pass on life-saving knowledge is something I’m proud to be part of every single day.

Evening: Balance & Building

After work, Sue and I head out for a walk together. It’s our way to decompress, catch up, and just enjoy some space after busy days.

Back home, I carve out at least one hour minimum to work on Volcano Publishing. Whether it’s reviewing a course, planning new content, or testing tools, this daily consistency is what turns ideas into a business.

Then it’s time for tea, some TV to unwind, and lights out around 10pm.

The Reality Behind the Routine

This isn’t a day of endless leisure or “easy money.” It’s about fitting a business into real life.

  • Early mornings fuelled by purpose.

  • A fulfilling (and sometimes exhausting) day job.

  • Family time and shared rituals.

  • Consistent, focused effort to grow a business brick by brick.

That’s what being an online entrepreneur actually looks like.

Final Word

Being an entrepreneur isn’t about escaping work — it’s about building something meaningful alongside the life you already value.

For me, it’s about:

  • Supporting an important cause.

  • Helping others learn and grow.

  • Creating a business that can one day give me more freedom to travel, support my family, and live on my terms.

It’s not glamorous. It’s not perfect. But it’s real — and it’s mine.
